Disadvantages of Juicing

Juicing is definitely helpful to you but it does carry some disadvantages, though the health benefits typically far outweigh these:

  • Cost. Juicers are an expensive household appliance to buy, costing in the range of hundreds to thousands of dollars. You also use up more produce in juicing when compared to eating the fruit whole so you will spend more money purchasing the produce you need. How To Juice

The first thing you need to do is to select a juicer. There are two main types of juicers you can choose from. There are pros and cons to both:

  • Centrifugal Juicer. This is the cheapest juicer to purchase and offers you the best in value for your money. A centrifugal juicer is about $75 USD or more. You feed the produce through a hole, where it comes in contact with a spinning blade. It juices your fruits and vegetables within about sixty seconds, is lightweight, and many parts can be run through the dishwasher. It is loud when it is running and is not as good with leafy green vegetables.
  • Masticating Juicer. These are more expensive at about $300 or more USD.

Fruits and vegetables are chewed up with at least one auger.

It works well with leafy green vegetables and results in a drier pulp when compared to centrifugal juicers. It does its job quietly but can take as long as five minutes before you can get your juice, versus centrifugal models that juice much faster. 

It also carries the advantage of being able to make nut butters and frozen drinks. These models have smaller feeding chutes that require preparation time to cut up produce before it is juiced.  

Blending Instead Of Juicing

Blending is different from juicing in that, with juicing, you remove the pulp, which is the insoluble fiber, making for a more clear liquid juice. Blending retains the pulp and pulverizes every bit of the fruit and/or vegetable together making for a thicker drink known as a smoothie. 

If you don’t mind a thicker juice, you should use a blender instead. It will give you insoluble as well as soluble fiber. 

Additionally blending is the perfect complement to juicing, when you consider there is produce that can’t be juiced, like bananas, avocados and berries are actually better blended than juiced. You can easily do both, and even combine juices with smoothie blends.

The important features you need to consider when buying a blender include the following:

  • Power. If you are using your blender to make smoothies, use a blender between 700 and 1,500 watts. If you choose a blender with more than 1,500 watts, you will liquefy the ingredients, making for a runnier smoothie. Wattages of less than 700 watts will chop vegetables and fruits but will not make a good smoothie. 
  • Container size. Make sure you get a container big enough to hold the size of juice you are looking for. If you plan to make more than one serving at a time, make sure you get a larger blender. A countertop smoothie blender will hold about 5-8 cups of liquid. A handheld blender will work for smaller smoothies and a personal blender will allow you to make about two cups of juice at a time. 
  • Pitcher type. The pitcher on the blender can be made of glass, steel, or plastic. Plastic pitchers are the most common type and will be a good choice if it is free of BPA. Plastic pitchers are durable but will not look shiny and new after a few uses. Steel pitchers are durable but won’t let you see what is going on inside the blender and you may over-blend or under-blend your smoothie.  
  • Speeds and controls. Most blenders come with between 3 and 16 speeds. There will be push button blenders, touch pad blenders, and dial turning blenders to choose from. Some have specific cycles just for making your smoothie in that says “smoothie” on the label. In general, it does not matter how many speeds your blender has as all will make smoothies in just a few minutes’ time.  
  • Cost. If you purchase a higher priced blender, you are likely to get a blender that offers you more features to choose from and will have more wattage so your smoothie will be easier to make. Costlier blenders tend to last longer than cheap ones.
